Downton Abbey 6.1

downton

Downton Abbey started its final season Sunday night. I’m happy to see it back but a bit said knowing this will be the end. Hopefully everyone gets a happy ending but I doubt they will.

To start everything off the Crawley’s learned that another estate not too far from them has been sold and all the contents of the house are up for auction. This has been hinted at for a few seasons as the aristocracy is in a decline. They learn of the situation because of Daisy’s father in-law being put off his tenant property because of the sale. What will become of the tenants who have lived on the property of generations? Daisy (Sophie McShera)  doesn’t help the situation when she confronts the new owners and demands what will happen to them. This confrontation may lose her father in law his livelihood not to mention her own.

Mary (Michelle Dockery)  is confronted by a maid from the hotel she had a liaison at. She is blackmailing Mary for money which Mary refuses to give her. The maid is persistent and tells Robert (Hugh Boneville) about what Mary has done. When Mary finds out she rushes into the room to find that he father has everything in hand. The maid had originally wanted 1,000 pounds form Mary but Robert gets her to take 50. He’s a smart man and gets her to agree because he said he report her to the police for blackmail which would be a much stiffer penalty.

The dowager is in fighting form when she finds out that the London hospital wants to take over their small local one. She up against Cousin Isobel (Penelope Wilton) who wants the takeover thinking it will be better for the patients. It’s always fun to see Maggie Smith face off against an opponent. Her rapier wit leaves many bloody.

The episode ends on a happy note as Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) and Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) finally come to terms with what is expected for their marriage. Things were a bit p in the air because Mrs. Hughes was embarrassed about exactly what Mr. Carson wanted. Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle)  and Anna (Joanne Froggatt) also learn that someone has come forward on confessed to pushing Mr. Greene into the street. A witness verified that they were seen at a pub together. Now Anna is off the hook for man slaughter. But this couple can’t seem to catch a break. We learn that Anna has had several miscarriages. She knows her husband wanted to have several children and she’s understandable upset.

It’s bittersweet knowing that this will be the end. I’m looking forward to my finally days with the inhabitants of Downton Abbey.
